Realization and test of a prototype for real time urban traffic control.

The PRODYN system which is developed by the 1022 consortium and intends to become an operational system has the particularity to be tested on the field thanks to the ZELT (Zone Experimentale et Laboratoire de Trafic de Toulouse). In the past PRODYN developed by the CERT was tested on the field, nevertheless some new developments have been made, and it was considered very useful to test the intersection prototype and the system of intersection prototype on real environment. The first part of this paper describes the basis of the PRODYN algorithm and its new developments. The second part of the paper is devoted to the prototype system. The interface, carefully designed to allow connection with every European traffic light controller, is presented. The PRODYN single unit designed to control an isolated intersection is described. Then the paper focuses on the structure of a network system, communication links and Man-machine tool. This part is completed by integration of PRODYN in a RTI environment and future improvements. The last part presents the results of field experiments performed on ZELT area. From sensors and surveyors data different indicators have been computed: total travelled distance, total travel time, total stops, travel time of the kilometre and principal components of flows. The results on one intersection and on a 8 intersections network show respectively 9% and 8% benefits on travel time.
