The analysis of the lack of traffic safety is often difficult because research workers usually do not see an accident take place. Therefore the data used are of an historical nature, information on accidents which have already occurred. An explanation of the accident is sought by means of reconstruction. An alternative to this method of research is the observation of conflicts and conflict behaviour. A traffic conflict is an observable situation in which two or more road users approach each other in space and time in such a way that there is a risk of collision if their movements remain unchanged. As a result of International Co-operation the International Committee on Traffic Conflict Techniques ICTCT was founded, and seminars on studies in Rouen in france and in Malmoe in sweden were organised. After a description of the different conflict techniques the situation in the netherlands is outlined.
