Samenvatting

Based on the European and US Low- beam situation, tests were made on the recognition distance for pedestrians. The following parameters were investigated; (1) shape of the headlamps; (2) mounting height of the headlamps; (3) inclination of the headlamps; (4) reflectance factor of pedestrians. The conclusions from the work were that the recognition distance for pedestrians illuminated by low beam headlamps could be improved by: (a) optimisation of the geometry and optics of headlamps; (b) increased visibility of pedestrians; (c) improvements to the mounting height of headlamps; (d) introduction of headlamp levelling devices; and (e) improvement to the power supply.
