Violating the red light can be considered as a good indicator of road users behaviour. A study of driver behaviour at a sample of signalised intersections and pedestrian crossings was undertaken in order to investigate the frequency of red-running in Polish cities. Surveys were conducted at 72 stop-lines located at 24 traffic-controlled intersections or pedestrian crossings. 16 were located in Warsaw and 8 in 6 other cities. Different types of intersections (4-leg, T-type, pedestrian crossings) were surveyed at different time periods (morning peak hour, mid-day interpeak period, afternoon peak hour, evening traffic). Data analysis led to the conclusion that the rates of red-runners are not correlated with traffic volumes on main and crossing streets and the proportion of the green light in the cycle (split). The most important outcome of the study is that the rates of red-light violations in Poland are several times higher than, for example, in the United Kingdom.
