The problems caused by lack of experience in young recently qualified drivers are outlined. Improvements to driver training programmes are described for Sweden. Skid training is mandatory but otherwise the learner may choose between a lay instructor (over 24 and with 5 years' experience) or a professional teacher. Theory and practical driving tests must be taken. The age limit for learning to drive was lowered to 16 from 17.5 years to enable students to have more practice time before taking tests. 45-50% of the population took advantage of an early start and consequently increased their practice time by 2.5- to 3-fold and reduced their accident risk per kilometre by 46% compared with students starting at 17.5 years. However it was students from the better socioeconomic groups who took advantage of this opportunity. The psychology of safe driving is discussed in relation to planned changes in the curriculum.
