Samenvatting

The work reported in this paper had two objectives: the first was to assess levels of provision of local facilities and the second was to examine their influence on the use of environmentally friendly modes of transport and the discouragement of the use of the car. The research findings show that the integrated provision of housing and facilities in neighbourhood planning can encourage the use of those facilities thereby reducing the length of journeys (both car-based and non car-based) made by residents. Provision alone however, is markedly less successful in encouraging walking and almost totally unsuccessful in encouraging cycling. (A)
