Samenvatting

This review considers research and best practice internationally to make recommendations to police makers on ways of reducing the number and severity of casualties in accidents involving excess and inappropriate speed on different types of road. The influence of speed as a factor in accidents and injury and factors influencing individual choice of speed are examined. Current speed management techniques are discussed. Ways of encouraging the appropriate choice of speed are considered in the areas of: (a) infrastructure design; (b) regulation and enforcement; and (c) education, training and publicity. A list of tried and tested measures are recommended for implementation and areas for further research suggested.
