Samenvatting

Injury Control is now one of the US Government's three top health priorities, along with AIDS and chronic diseases. Motor vehicle crashes are still the cause of far more deaths each year than any other mode of transportation and nearly equal heart disease and cancer in their health consequences as measured in years of potential life lost. Improving traffic safety requires changing driving behaviour, reducing hazards on the roadway, and improving vehicle crashworthiness. A new National Transportation Policy calls for a nation- wide campaign to increase public awareness of road trauma, promote improved driver training, and build support for more effective traffic law enforcement.
