Samenvatting

A quarter of all fatalities and injuries on the roads are work-related, with heavy goods vehicle incidents probably representing 10-15% of the total. A review of work-related road traffic incidents was undertaken by the Health and Safety Executive, UK. This indicated that there is a need for non-legislative mechanisms to dovetail road traffic law with health and safety law, for increased liaison between those administering these aspects of law, and for minimum safety/risk minimisation standards applying to employers, the self employed and others. The creation of a high level, independent task group to develop new policy, standards, guidance and enforcement practice in this area was proposed and adopted by the UK government. A code for employers on the control of risk to workers from driving is to be proposed.
