The historical background to rail transport links between the Palatinate in Germany and Alsace, France is outlined with reference to the Neustadt-Wissembourg-Strasbourg line, Winden-Wissembourg line and Wörth-Lauterbourg line. In 1993, the government of Rheinland-Pfalz introduced a new service scheme for local trains called 'Integraler Taktfahrplan - Rheinland-Pfalz-Takt', offering regular rail services. Closed down railway lines were reopened and integrated with the new system. Reopened lines included the Grnstadt-Enkenbach line, Eisenberg-Ramsen, and Grnstadt-Monsheim line. In 1995 a contract was signed between the Ministry of Transport of Rheinland-Pfalzand the Alsace Region for the reopening of cross border lines. The negotiations leading to the opening of the Winden-Wissembourg line and Wörth-Lauterbourg line are described. The impacts on tourism are outlined. Future projects are discussed.
