Samenvatting

The introduction in the UK of the tachograph and legislation to limit drivers' hours and outlaw piecework is described in relation to subsequent EU legislation. Falsification of tachograph and speed records and the detection of such falsification are discussed. If tachographs are disabled then the speed limiter also fails to function. Accident statistics suggest that lorry drivers are 3 times as likely to be in a fatal accident on an A class road and twice as likely on the motorway. Proposed changes in European legislation are discussed.
