Samenvatting

Travelling with young children can lead to difficult situations. Accordingly, travel preparations should be geared towards the needs of the youngest with appropriate medical advise. Young children tolerate most means of transportation. When travelling long distances by car, clear rules ought to be established, and many children require antiemetic measures. With regards to traffic safety, compromises during family vacation are not acceptable. Travelling by plane or train is less stressful than travelling by bus or car. As a medical advisor, one ought to be familiar with age limits for certain immunisations and medications (particularly antimalarial agents). Parental knowledge of modern rules for oral rehydration in cases of traveller's diarrhoea is frequently insufficient. Whenever possible, travelling with young children to high risk regions should be avoided.
