Samenvatting

As part of the ASTRID (Algorithms and Systems for the Benefit of Travel Time Information on DRIPs (Dynamic Route Information Panels)) project conceivable methods for obtaining real-time travel times for presentation on DRIPs are addressed. Available methods for estimating real-time travel times on motorway sections are discussed. In particular, attention is paid to methods based on traffic data collected by induction loop detectors. The principle, the characteristics, the advantages and disadvantages, and the performance of each of the available methods is assessed. The specific hardware requirements of the methods described are related to the hardware that is available in the study area of the ASTRID project, area of the ASTRID project, namely the Rotterdam beltway. Methods which are considered to be appropriate within the ASTRID project for obtaining real-time travel times on motorway sections are: (1) a method based on direct computation from speed measurements; and (2) a method based on comparison of traffic flow patterns. A computational algorithm is designed for obtaining real-time travel times on motorway sections. See also C 4789, C 7428, C 7430 and C 7431.
