A slightly different version of this study is published in "Policy, Planning and Sustainability. Improved transport possibilities give rise to changes in land use, settlement patterns and activity structures and likewise the spatial distribution of different activities forms the basis of transport needs. The built environment and the transport structure are influencing one another and in order to affect the urban structure it is important to know the relations between them. Important factors for the interplay, which the authors highlight in this paper are activity and housing localisation, density, centre structure, the constitution of the transport system and modal split. The relations have been studied in five case study cities - Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Halle-Neustadt, Freiburg and Almere - selected because of the large variations in the constitution of their transport structure, built environment and development control.
