Samenvatting

The aim of this report is to provide a review of the available literature on speed and accidents and to outline suggestions for further research in this area. The review concentrates on the relationship between speed behaviour and accident and injury causation rather than upon methods of speed control. European studies show that reductions in travel speeds or speed dispersion have led to reduced accidents. US studies support the conclusion about speed dispersion but not travel speeds. US studies also indicate that high skewness in the speed distribution might be associated with high accident rates and that vehicle involvement rates in rural accidents when plotted against travel speed form a u shaped curve ./.F3
