Samenvatting

This paper is also published in the 13th ARRB - 5th REAAA Combined Conference, 25-29 August 1986, Adelaide, South Australia, Volume 13, Number 9, p. 90-102. For the abstract see PB 27637 (In: B 27628 S) (IRRD 289486) d reduction is widely recognised as a necessary condition for improving safety in residential area. However, there is a resistance to the concept of reduced speeds in Australia, and in particular it has been claimed that there is no evidence of a relationship between speed reduction and accident reduction in local streets. This paper reviews recent literature to see if this is so.
