The role and skills of the investigator into the relationship between vehicle defects and vehicle crashes, the pattern of investigation events, investigation and recording techniques, safety precautions and information analysis and reporting techniques are discussed. Vehicle inspection techniques are given and a program matrix for highway safety research and a vehicle deformation index are added.
