The East Nippon Expressway Company Limited (NEXCO East) is planning to renovate its electronic toll collection (ETC) system with reviewing the system requirements as NEXCO East (or former Japan Highway Public Corporation)has installed ETC system for more than nine years, to optimize the operation. Especially this renovation will be drastic and bring a reasonable andeasy-to-operate ETC system which will not rely on the legacy system. In 2008 we experimentally conducted procurement with regard to the next-generation ETC system specification formulated newly with the conditions mentioned above. This paper addresses our activities to renovate the ETC system.
