Samenvatting

This document is the report of the findings of the Ad-Hoc Group on Motorcycle Safety, which the European Experimental Vehicles Committee (EEVC) set up to review how to improve motorcycle safety. It contains chapters on (1) accidents and injuries; (2) primary safety; (3) secondary safety; (4) rider protection; and (5) other vehicles, the road environment, and traffic regulations (see separate abstracts ITRD E106664-E106668). Primary safety is concerned with how to design motorcycles to avoid accidents, secondary safety concerns minimisation of injuries in accidents, and rider protection includes motorcycle helmets and protective clothing. To make motorcycling safer, it is necessary to consider, not only motorcycles and their riders, but also their road environment, including other vehicles, roadside furniture, road surfaces, and traffic signal settings. Each chapter ends with a statement of conclusions.
