Samenvatting

An international conference on "Road Traffic Injuries and Health Equity" was held in Cambridge, Massachusetts, April 10-12, 2002. The objective of the conference was to review the current status of traffic injuries occurring on roads in developing countries, evaluate interventions that could significantly reduce the number of traffic accident injuries in these nations, and develop a multicountry intervention plan for research and action. Participants of the conference proposed six main areas for future research and action on traffic injuries that occur on roads in developing countries: (1) injury surveillance systems, (2) systems for protecting vulnerable population groups, (3) mechanisms for national road safety enforcement, (4) minimum essential trauma care packages, (5) advocacy and political engagement, and (6) capacity development.
