Samenvatting

The results of a research project were used to develop a driving assessment unit within a neurological rehabilitation centre in Newcastle upon Tyne. Before setting up the unit, it was necessary to obtain data to determine the problems of people with specific disabilities and the unmet need. The centre now accepts open referrals from anywhere in the north of England offering advice and assessment to drivers with any type of disability. A need was identified for training or retraining driving skills for people recovering from brain damage and other neurological disorders. Residential driving programmes are planned and at present, physiotherapists, clinical neuropsychologists, a medical consultant and a driving instructor are working together to develop a suitable programme. This presentation describes the development of the Driving Assessment Centre, including results from the research study and the planned driver retraining programmes.
