Samenvatting

Three methods were used to investigate driver responses to the following concepts. (1) The UCLA sign tester. (2) The preview House and (3) The UCLA driving simulation laboratory. It was found that (1) messages should be short and simple; (2) advance messages should be accurate; (3) drivers preferred knowing about lane blockage, distance of blockage, time delay expected, reason for delay, and location; (4) misunderstandings resulted from using lane numbers, instead of right, left, center or middle lanes and (5) information on normal traffic is desired.
