Research of a modern freight traffic-system by using computer simulation.

Details are given of a computer simulation study of an alpine freight transit route based on electrically driven road vehicles. Simulations were based on speed profiles and the topography of the route. Several kinds of electric vehicles were simulated and their performance compared with that of diesel engined vehicles. The object of the concept was to provide an economic, ecologically sensitive system making extensive use of existing roads. The system studied is based on an electric powertrain supplied by overhead wires. Electric truck configurations which would permit the truck to drive on two lanes without affecting other traffic are considered. Transit terminals are located at either end of the route where equipment located at either end of the route where equipment for the rapid change of semi-trailers and interchangeable platforms are available. Electric propulsion has the important advantage of producing no air pollution in the numerous tunnels along the route; noise levels are also less than those of the conventional combustion engine.
