Samenvatting

Latex-modified concrete (LMC) overlays improve bridge deck skid resistance, ride quality, and surface appearance. However, the construction of these overlays has become increasingly difficult because of increases in traffic. The Virginia Department of Transportation (DOT) solved this problem by placing very-early-strength latex-modified concrete (LMC-VE) overlays, which can achieve the specified minimum compressive strength in 3 hours, permitting opening to traffic more quickly. Work takes place during off-peak traffic periods, often at night, to minimize delays to the traveling public. The LMC-VE overlays are more durable than other concrete overlays, are less prone to cracking, and are more resistant to chloride ion penetration than other overlays. The cost is about 75% of what conventional LMC overlays cost.
