This CD-ROM comprises 19 reports commissioned from TRL, Hyder Consulting, MVA, P-E International and DETR by the Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions on the feasibility of road user charging. The reports describe and assess the electronic tolling trials which took place at TRL from November 1996 to June 1997. The tolling equipment, supplied by a consortium headed by GEC-Marconi and Bosch Telecom GmbH, was based on microwave technology with camera enforcement, and the trials aimed to test the robustness of the equipment. its ability to effect the tolling transaction dependably, as well as its capacity to respond to deliberate attempts at evasion. A parallel programme of work looked at systems needed to complement the main tolling transaction: for example ergonomics and design principles of in-vehicle equipment; traffic management; diversion; implementation issues, and road-vehicle communications. For abstracts of individual reports see IRRD 491341-491359.
