Sydney is a global city with more than four million people. It is forecast to grow to five million by 2022. Fundamental to its sustained prosperity and competitiveness is the efficient movement of goods and people. The Sydney Orbital is now being completed a motorway standard ring road over 100 kilometres in length. The maturation of the strategic road network raises issues about the future for land, air and sea freight. Changes are also occurring to business trips and recreational trips on the road system. This paper canvases the prime issues which will drive Sydney's transport infrastructure needs over the next two decades. It identifies the areas in which research will be required to assist transport planners to develop a more complete understanding of the emerging mechanisms affecting urban transport systems. Implications for the ongoing planning and development of Sydney's strategic road network are described. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. 0612AR242E.
