Samenvatting

A new approach to residential street design is proposed where a range of alternative designs are evaluated against a set of predetermined performance standards. Within the topographic, geological and climatic constraints peculiar to each street. To illustrate this process, alternative designs that overcome some of the undesirable effects of conventional design practice have been assessed for their impact on all aspects of residential streets. Although this process requires a greater design effort, the result is a more appropriate and probably cheaper solution than the imposition of uniform technical standards for all street designs.
