Second order traffic modelling was initiated by the Payne-Whitman (PW) model. Some inconsistencies were discovered in this model and other models were developed.Among these, the second order macroscopic model suggested by AW Rascle and Zhang (ARZ)does not exhibit any physically inconsistent solutions. The aim of this paper is the theoretical discussion of this model. In the full paper, theoretical investigations are described which focus on the resolution of the Riemann problem and numerical solutions. In addition, results show that the inhomogeneous Riemann problem for the ARZ model is equivalent to a related first order model with modified equilibrium flow density relationship. The boundary conditions for the ARZ model are deduced. They can be expressed in terms of an upstream and downstream supply. (A) Reprinted with permission from Elsevier.
