Samenvatting

Traditionally pedestrians wishing to cross at signals in urban areas have to press a button and wait until the signals change in accordance to a pre-set pattern (usually dependent upon vehicle flows or detection). Trials have been carried out in Greece, Portugal and England, where signal settings are amended by pre-arrival microwave detection of pedestrians. Details are given on the equipment used, as well as the evaluation of pedestrian safety and mobility. Micro-level pedestrian behaviour, with reference to interactions between pedestrians and vehicles was also studied. (A)
