Samenvatting

This paper presents two examples of the use of variable message signs (VMS) to provide solutions to traffic problems. VMS was used in an accident reduction scheme at the A64/A1 interchange in Yorkshire. The problems that required attention are examined and the scheme developed outlined. The effectiveness of the scheme so far which includes a reduction in injury accidents from 11 to 4, is discussed. In the second application VMS was used within a driver information system, the Forth Estuary Driver Information Control System (FEDICS). The monitoring of the impact of FEDICS is described and the results obtained in the first 6 months are discussed. This includes an assessement of traffic diversion and individual driver questionnaires.
