Samenvatting

The Department of Transport (DOT) values the costs and benefits of road schemes and road safety measures to ensure that the best use is made of resources. The DOT commissioned a programme of research to revalue the costs of accidents, part of which was aimed at revising accident related costs and part of which revised casualty related costs. This report summarises TRL research on accident related costs: the cost of damage to property, the cost to insurance companies in handling claims resulting from road accidents and the cost of police time in dealing with road accidents. Revised estimates are presented for each of these elements and the total average accident related cost per accident is calculated. (A)
