Samenvatting

This paper describes the main themes and initiatives within the road safety strategies of four selected countries; Sweden, United Kingdom (UK), the Netherlands and New Zealand. These countries were selected because, except in the case of New Zealand, they are recognised as the best-performing countries. A best-performing country may be defined as one that has the lowest, or among the lowest, rates of death or injury globally due to road traffic crashes. In New Zealand's case, its current strategy is highly regarded conceptually, even though its implementation has been limited to date. The paper identifies the main road safety challenges in Victoria (which are also challenges for most of the countries under review), and provides a summary of the key initiatives being undertaken by each country to reduce road trauma in these areas.
