This report is the D2 deliverable of the PISa project which is associated with Workpackage 2: User needs and requirements — Task 2.1.1: Statistics. In developing a PTW ISS it is important that it is ‘needs-driven’ in terms of: • What accident scenarios need to be addressed, • What technologies best meet these needs and • What rider/driver factors need to be considered in relation to the above two aspects to ensure an optimal solution. The second and third points above are addressed in the D3 deliverable report: Powered two wheeler Integrated Safety (PISa): Review of PTW safety technologies and literature. It is the first point above which is addressed in this document. The report reviews a number of major European PTW accident studies including: APROSYS (Advanced PROtection SYStems), MAIDS (Motorcycle Accident In Depth Study), SafetyNet, TRACE (Traffic Accident Causation in Europe) as well as various national studies. For each study, data is recorded in detail under the following headings: - The PTW market (Section 7), - Accident data (trends, risk, scenarios and causation) (Section 8), - Injury data (distribution, type/outcome and causation) (Section 9), - Accident factors (time of day/year, weather/light conditions, speeding, engine size and hardware and traffic control methods) (Section 10), - Crash test scenarios (Section 11) - Design implications (Section 12) This information is preceded by Section 6 which summarises these findings for quick reference. The Conclusions section (Section 13) applies these findings in the context of the PISa project providing direction and guidance to future work packages concerning the key factors to be considered.
