The `ESCAP Region', covering Asia and the Pacific, is one of the world's most rapidly developing regions. The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) undertook a limited questionnaire survey on road safety in the ESCAP Region in 1993, and a more detailed study in 1995-97. This publication is the final report of the latter road safety study, and reflects the situation in the region at the end of 1994, as far as the collected data permit. The report has the following chapters: (1) introduction; (2) outline of the study's methodology and discussion of its data sources; (3) comparison of the safety problem between the ESCAP region and other parts of the world, and between different nations in the region, including some detailed statistical analyses and projections; (4) detailed analyses of the data returned through the ESCAP questionnaires, and those collected from other sources and during visits to several countries in the region; (5) review of current policies and practices and summary of the situation in each sector relevant to road safety; (6) identifying the issues influencing the strategy for improving road safety in the region; (7) giving the priorities for action at the regional, sub-regional, and national levels; and (8) summarising the main findings and conclusions and identifying major safety weaknesses.
