Samenvatting

The Review of Road Safety in Transport and Land Use Planning, Policies and Guidelines was undertaken as part of the review of the NSW Road Safety 2000 Strategic Plan. The objectives of this study were to: document achievements to date in terms of developing road safety as a major consideration in planning and managing transport and land use; identify and describe initiatives, mechanisms and processes which aim to incorporate road safety in transport and land use planning policies and guidelines; and provide information to contribute to the review of the Road Safety 2000 Strategy. The study comprised two main components: face-to-face with RTA personnel and key stakeholders who had experience and involvement in the areas of land use and transport planning; and a review of relevant literature from the RTA and key stakeholder organisations. The study found that there was a general lack of awareness of the role of road safety land use and transport planning. Strategic planning outcomes tended to be more related to environmental, social and economic issues, rather than road safety. The study identifies both the achievements to date, and the impediments to achieving the objectives as stated in Road Safety 2000. (A)
