Samenvatting

Methods of rural traffic counting currently used in developing countries are reviewed and the accuracy of the resulting flow estimates are examined. A sample questionnaire survey shows the inaccuracy of rural traffic estimates, which could only be improved at a disproportionate increase in cost. More needs to be known above the magnitude and causes of the variation in flow. Automatic traffic counters should be used on a wider scale.
