Samenvatting

The traffic generation effects of new and improved roads is looked at theoretically and evidence for it examined. The implications are discussed. The paper explores the historical perception of traffic generated by road improvement and how attitudes to it have changed. The theories on the subject are presented and some examples are given of applications in various case studies. Before and after study evidence are reviewed.
