Samenvatting

The history of the WHO's involvement in the study of road accidents in the Middle East is traced from 1966. The organisation takes a three-pronged approach which covers advice about safety precautions, the establishment of an information system about accidents and the care of resultant injuries. Brief details are given of research programmes which have been undertaken, conferences organised and working parties set up in the Middle East. Funds have been used to support national road safety campaigns and the development of emergency services in the region.
