The document identifies and describes the key issues for inclusion in a road safety component in a new project providing the basis for further discussions within the Bank and other organisations. A strategy is developed for improving the Bank's performance in road safety lending projects, and the information needs and training requirements for Bank staff are determined. Key issues for consideration when tackling the road accident situation are discussed, and the development of strategies and interventions for comprehensive road safety are presented. The report outlines the required actions within the Bank to improve staff capabilities and promote global efforts to reduce road accident problems in developing countries. The involvement of the Bank during the last decade is outlined and lessons from its experience in road safety are discussed. Matters considered in the report are amplified and supported by information included in annexes.
