The Centre for Transport and Navigation of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management of the Netherlands conducts annual research into the effects of driving under the influence of alcohol. The research itself and the alcohol consumption of motorists during weekend nights are discussed in this report. The results presented in this report comprise the years 1999-2007. This survey is carried out in close collaboration with the Dutch Police and annually contains of 73 alcohol checks. These checks are spread amongst 25 Dutch police regions. In order to ensure a representative picture of the Netherlands, a minimum of 2 controls per police region per year are required. The sample must contain a minimum of 20.000 individual tests in total. The alcohol checks concern a random sample of motorists driving in the night of Friday on Saturday (Friday night) and of Saturday on Sunday (Saturday night) between 22:00 and 04:00 hours. The result of the test is the Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC). A person is in breach of the law when the alcohol limit (BAC greater or equals 0,50 g/l in case of an experienced driver; BAC greater or equals 0,20 g/l in case of a novice driver) is exceeded.
