Samenvatting

Over the past ten years or so there has been a growing awareness of the road accident problem in third world countries. The alternative ways of determining road accident fatality rates in developed and developing countries are investigated. Use is also made of smeed- type relationship in order to determine the "seriousness" of the problem in the different countries. Results indicate how ranking in order of seriousness changes, depending on the method used to determine fatality rate. The implications of these results are discussed in detail.
