This paper is the first in a series reporting on a comprehensive survey carried out in the Australian state of Queensland during 1963–1964. About ten percent of 480,000 registered vehicle owners were sent a questionnaire, with about 87% response. The results were compared with police records on all significant acidents during the year 1961. Part I deals with methodology and vehicle use variables. Subsequent parts will discuss type of accident and type of vehicle variables, age of driver and sex of driver. It is suggested in this Part that private cars may have significantly higher exposure-corrected involvement rates than commercial vehicles.
