Samenvatting

The author considers the risk of young people being involved in road accidents from the point of view of a developmental psychologist. Three issues are examined: a) road risk specificity, b) the overrisk of young people on the road and c) accident proneness. Aspects discussed include general risk-taking behaviour, gender, the illusion of control and family background. Some conclusions are drawn relating traffic behaviour to behaviour-related problems.
