Each year the Authority releases a comprehensive analysis of all reported road accidents involving fatalities, personal injuries or material damage which occur on Irish roads. This report, “Road Accident Facts”, is based on road accident information supplied by the Garda Siochana and supplied to the Authority for processing and analysis. Details of the comprehensive analysis of all accidents reported in 2000 was published in August 2001. The main points of note were: A total of 415 people were killed in 362 fatal accidents on Irish roads in 2000. - Males were much more likely than females to be killed in a fatal road accident in 2000 - 302 males compared with 104 females. [Note: gender of victim was not specified in all cases]. - 55 young drivers (18-24) were killed in road accidents in 2000. Fifty of these were male. - Fatalities in 2000 among the main road user categories were: car users 260 (63%), pedestrians 85 (21), pedal cyclists 10 (2%), motorcyclists 39 (9%) and other road users 21 (5%). - Ireland's rate of road deaths in 1999, at 11.0 per 100,000 population, is ranked joint seventh out of the 15 EU Member States. - The number of reported serious injury accidents (1,189) fell by 9% in 2000. The total number of serious injuries sustained by participants in road accidents fell from 1,867 in 1999 to 1,640 in 2000. - The total number of persons injured in road accidents declined from 12,340 in 1999 to 12,043 in 2000 'Single vehicle only' collisions were reported in a third (33%) of all fatal road accidents. - A total of 121 persons (or 29% of total) were killed between the hours of 9.00 p.m. and 3.00 a.m. - the hours most strongly associated with drink driving. - Factors identified by the Gardai as contributing to accidents (where specified) were: driver (82%), pedestrian (10%), road (4%), environment (3%) and vehicle (1%). - The cost of reported road accidents in 2000 is estimated at approximately £600 million based on fatalities and injuries sustained.
