Samenvatting

A calendar of events affecting road safety and traffic from 1903-1990 is presented. Tables are provided on accident trends 1980-1990. This includes statistics of vehicle population, traffic and road lengths, accidents and accident rates by road class and severity of injury, by time of accident and severity, casualty rates, vehicle and drivers involved. Detailed tables are provided that break down these statistics still further to include the effects of daylight and darkness, speed limits, weather conditions, road surface conditions, lighting conditions and vehicle and road user types (including age and sex of the road user). Each year in this publication some review articles are published. In the 1990 volume the following are included: (1) General review of road traffic accidents in 1990 (Ackroyd, R.);(2) Early road accident investigation: problems and priorities 1909-1933 (White, B.M.); (3) The importance of accident data to local authorities (McGuigan, D.); (4) The risks posed by vehicles to other road users (Jones, D.); (5) Bus and coach accidents and casualties in 1990 (Colski, A.); (6) Vehicles skidding in injury road accidents (Ho, Y.S.); (7) The distribution of injury severity in serious road accident casualties (Hopkin, J.M. et al); (8) The ABI "snapshot" of motor insurance claims (Broughton, J.); and (9) Automatic vehicle speed data (Benn, N.). For the abstracts of these articles see C 2151 - 2159.
