This article reviews traffic accident statistics in Switzerland for 2001. The positive trend of recent years was continued, with numbers of fatalities and injuries decreasing although numbers of accidents increased. The improvements are attributed to better passive safety and increased enforcement and education. Typology of casualties shows that most fatalities and serious injuries occurred to people in cars. Young adults and males were most at risk across all road users, although ages affected altered with type of vehicle. Most accidents happened on urban streets, with most of the seriously injured being victims of single-vehicle collisions. Speed and alcohol had the clearest influence on accident causes. The goal of the Swiss Government is to reduce the number of victims to below three hundred by the year 2010.
