This is the first edition of an annual statistical summary of road crashes resulting in hospital admission. It replaces and enhances the discontinued Australian Bureau of Statistics publication 'Road Traffic Accidents Involving Casualties, Australia'. Data from two sources are presented in respect of 1990. National police road crash data are presented primarily to summarize crash charactiristics. National hospital admissions records are used to assess the extent of road crash hospitalisation and to evaluate specific characteristics of those hospitalised. The overall police and hospital counts are also compared in an assessment of the relative strenghts of the two data sources. Comparisons are also made between characteristics of fatal and hospitalisation crashes.
