Samenvatting

This paper describes and evaluates a consolidated road freight system which reduces transport costs, pollution, and vehicle mileage and saves energy. The basic idea behind the system is to combine the transport and storage function of containers by transporting freight in units of various standard sizes (swap bodies). Simulation of various trip organization scenarios are presented, and the vehicle mileage, energy consumption, transportation costs and exhaust emissions of each compared to those obtained using a conventional road transport system.
