The paper explores the development and evaluation of TRIPlanners (Multimodal travel public access information points) installed in the Southampton area during the DRIVE II project ROMANSE. The paper describes the various processses involved in the development including collection of timetable data from a large number of operators and the reduction of the information to a common format, the development of a network of public transport services, interchange points and gazettes of places served by public transport. The paper also describes the constraints on the design of the hardware and the software interfaces and the integration of software and data into robust systems for use by the public. Reference is also Reference is also made to the private vehicle information components of the system and to the parallel development of databases to update the system from time to time. The paper concludes with results of the evaluation of the system, from both an ergonomic and quantity of use point of view, and discusses ways in which the system may be extended. (A)
