Samenvatting

The number of miles travelled by motor vehicles in the R.S.A. is estimated by 2 different methods. The first is to estimate the mean fuel consumption of vehicles in the most important classes and to multiply this by the amount of petrol consumed by them, and to add to this the distance travelled by other vehicles which may be calculated independently. The result is 13.241 million miles. These figures are used to derive accident rates and casualty rates which are presented as tables.
